A Resounding Success: Stratford District's Music Program Shines Bright

The Stratford District secondary school’s music program has hit a high note this year with outstanding achievements by its symphonic band and jazz combo. Led by the dedicated guidance of teacher Paula Ortelli and the talents of student director Sam Pepper, these musical ensembles have soared to first-place finishes in recent competitions, showcasing the power of teamwork and a strong work ethic.

Paula Ortelli, an experienced music teacher with over 30 years of expertise, emphasizes the importance of dedication and collaboration among student musicians. This ethos has been the cornerstone of the program’s success, as evidenced by the accolades earned by both the jazz combo and symphonic band during the winter term.

The journey to success began with strategic planning by Ortelli, who made it a goal for the school’s music program to participate in various competitions across the province. This decision led to remarkable achievements, including gold medals and first-place awards at MusicFest regionals and the Kiwanis Festival of Performing Arts-Stratford.

MusicFest Canada, an esteemed national music competition established in 1972, provided an excellent platform for showcasing the talents of young bands and musicians. Ortelli notes that participating in such events not only allows students to perform for diverse audiences but also presents opportunities to garner recognition and awards.

The jazz combo, comprised of six talented Grade 11 and 12 students, particularly shone at the MusicFest regionals in Ancaster, where they clinched a gold medal. Additionally, they secured first place in their category at the Kiwanis Festival of Performing Arts-Stratford, further cementing their reputation for excellence.

Reflecting on the achievements, Ortelli expressed pride in the students’ exceptional performances and highlighted their invitation to MusicFest nationals in May. The journey to success continues, driven by a passion for music, dedication to craft, and a collaborative spirit that defines the ethos of the Stratford District’s music program.
