BRANTFORD, ON– The Brantford Fire Department is partnering with the Ontario Fire Marshal as well as fire departments across Ontario to execute the first annual Test Your Smoke detector Day on Thursday, September 28, 2023. The campaign aims to inform the general public regarding the value of mounting as well as keeping functioning smoke alarms in their homes.
” Last year, we needlessly lost 133 lives in fire-related incidents in Ontario,” states Brantford Fire Principal, Todd Binkley. “Smoke alarms are little tools that have a massive influence on life security. Working smoke alarms were absent in a number of the fatal occurrences that happened last year. The outcome for those impacted individuals might have been different if working smoke alarms were present in the house at the time of the fire occurrence.”
The Brantford Fire Department encourages all homeowners to carry out the following in their residences:
Purchase alarm systems that birth a qualification marking from a licensed testing laboratory.
Set up as well as preserve working smoke detector, at minimum, on every level of the house (consisting of the basement) as well as outside of resting locations.
Examination alarm systems once per month to ensure they remain in functioning order.
Inspect the day. Smoke alarms expire around every 10 years. Examine the back or side of the alarm system to see if it is time for a new one– even if they are hardwired.
Conduct yearly upkeep on all alarm systems. Vacuum cleaner them as soon as per year as well as alter the batteries twice per year, if relevant.
