Councillors Propose New Downtown Garbage Pickup Plan

Mayor Kevin Davis, spearheading the initiative to address downtown garbage collection issues, emphasized the urgency of the matter. He acknowledged the current system’s flaws, leading to strewn garbage on the streets due to torn bags, creating an unsightly and unsanitary environment for residents and commuters alike.

Recognizing the severity of the problem, Davis asserted the need for immediate action: “This is something that we need to correct and address.” He emphasized the importance of ensuring downtown cleanliness and safety.

The proposed plan entails a shift in garbage collection timing, with pickups scheduled from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. rather than the current 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Additionally, residents can place garbage for pickup between 12 a.m. to 7 a.m., a modification from the previous 12 a.m. to 9 a.m. timeframe.

Furthermore, plans include installing garbage drop-off bins at the Dalhousie Street and King Street intersection’s municipal parking lot. Future infrastructure upgrades along Dalhousie and Colborne Streets will eliminate sidewalk garbage bag placements, replaced by strategically positioned garbage receptacles.

Mayor Davis highlighted the transitional nature of the proposed changes: “The downtown collection system is going to change anyways in the next three to four years.” He emphasized the plan’s role as a bridge, aiding businesses and residents in adjusting to the forthcoming system while aiming for a cleaner downtown in the interim.

The proposal garnered support from the Downtown Brantford BIA, with Chair Barbara Sutherland endorsing it before the councillors. The plan is set for city council approval on March 26.

Additionally, councillors recommended a change in garbage collection days for approximately 5,000 residents in Wards 4 and 5. Starting the week of May 6, Ward 5 residents will shift their collection day to Tuesday from Monday, while Ward 4 residents will move to Wednesday from Tuesday. No alterations are planned for Thursday or Friday collections.

To ensure affected residents are informed, the city devised a comprehensive communications strategy, including door hanger information notices scheduled for delivery in April, three weeks prior to the implementation of changes. City officials attribute the adjustments to area growth, which has posed challenges for timely garbage collection.
